The Department of Pediatric Disciplines started on
3rd January 2005
with the joining of Dr. Rashna Dass as a Faculty. The services of this
Department are available at the
Main
Hospital at Mawdiangdiang since 1st June 2006
SERVICES:
Out-patient (OPD): The out-patient department runs on five days
a week i.e. Monday, to Friday. All patients from the age group of
0-18 years are being attended to in this department. The Department
plans to start special clinics soon
In-patient services:
The in-patient services also became partly functional from
3rd January 2005.
Since June 2006, the Department functions with 29 beds out of which 13
are Intensive Care Unit beds. The neonatal services were started from
January 2008 with the start of delivery of pregnant ladies.
Inter-specialty coordination with other existing clinical departments
i.e. Pathology, Radiology, Cardiology and Gastroenterology etc, are
being carried out for a holistic management of all children seen in
this Institute.
VACCINATION SERVICES
The department has also started the vaccination services for the
children as per requirement of the Department of Health and Family
Welfare, Govt. of India.
Working hours:

A.M. to 4 P.M. on all working days.
COMMUNITY SERVICES:
The department has started giving community health care as an
integral part of the services & training in an effort to reach out to
the community and promote the concept of Social Pediatrics, and at
present offers OPD services on Friday at the Diengpasoh PHC.
THE DEPARTMENT AT MAWDIANGDIANG:
The department has 29 beds capacity ( including Pediatrics Intensive
Care Unit)
The Department of Pediatric Disciplines comprises of:
1.
Neonatal Unit:
This has been since January 2008. The NICU is in the phase of
completion soon.
2.
Pediatric Intensive Care and Emergency
services: Keeping in view the need for specialized and emergent care of sick
children, the department has started a PICU (Pediatrics Intensive Care
Unit) since March 2007, designated to the attention of sick children
and their immediate care. This is a 13 bedded unit and is a state of
the art unit catering to the care of the extremely sick children
requiring ventilation, intensive care monitoring and specialized care.
This unit fulfills the long felt needs for Pediatric intensive care in
this region.
3.
General Pediatrics:
This looks after all general cases encompassing a wide variety of
disease states.
4.
Day care services:
The
department has designated a certain number of beds for day care
services such as intervention procedures, blood transfusion,
chemotherapy etc.
5.
Special follow-up clinics:
Depending on the needs of the region and patients, special clinics
will be held to look after specific group of disorders such as:
Immunology including HIV, Neurology and Neuro-developmental disorders,
Rheumatology, Allergy and Asthma, Hematology etc. These clinics will
function separate from the general OPD under a designated team of
doctors consisting of a Pediatric Faculty and Residents and para-medical
workers as needed.

OPD services:
The OPD services are available on all days a week except on Saturday
and Sunday from
9 A.M. onwards and cater to all children ranging from 0-
18 years.
7.
In-patient services:
This serves all Pediatric patients as well as neonatal cases for
admission, work up and treatment of sick cases and is a forum for
academic purposes and training of both undergraduates and
post-graduate students.
8.
Academic training:
The department is training both Junior (post MBBS) and Senior Resident
(post MD) as a part of its teaching activities and will soon initiate
training in both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as per the
MCI norms as well as the Indian Academy of Pediatrics and National
Neonatology Forum of India to meet both national and international
standards.
9. Other activities: The department also runs a Pediatric upper
& lower GI Endoscopy service. A leaflet on weaning foods has been
introduced for distribution to parents in both the
English and
Khasi
language.
10.

An INCLEN study (Multi-centric study).

“Model Injection Centers (MICs): A Program to improve
Injection Practices in
India” , an INCLEN study.
B) Intramural:
i) “Children with recurrent abdominal
pain: A clinical, endoscopic and histopathological evaluation”
THE FUTURE:
The plan of the Department is to develop most
sub-specialties in the field of Pediatrics and encourage research
activities towards diseases specific to this region along with the
highest quality of patient care. |
