Introduction |

The Department of Anatomy is located in -2 level of the Basic Medical Block of the Institute and started in August 2008 with the joining of Professor Asima Bhattacharyya as the Head of the department. The MBBS course was started from 1st September, 2008 with 50 students. Dr. Amitav Sarma and Dr. Sarah Ralte joined the department as Assistant Professor in August, 2011 and Dr. Bishwajeet Saikia joined the department as Assistant Professor on 16th April, 2015. Currently the department has 2 Senior Residents and 1 Post Graduate student. The department has a dissection hall with attached embalming room, Histology Laboratory, Museum, Library, Demonstration rooms (each room has a capacity of 50 students) and Research laboratories. The dissection hall has 3 embalming tanks, dissection tables and x-ray view boxes. Other than these it is furnished with 3 mortuary coolers and 2 band saw machine along with human skeleton models. The Histology laboratory is furnished with 50 binocular microscopes to study microscopic anatomy. The museum is furnished with sufficient numbers of models, charts and dissected body parts and organs. The number of books in the department library is approximately 200. One demonstration room has an overhead projector, desktop visualiser and interactive white board (for MBBS and BSc nursing) used for lectures, demonstrations, tutorials & PG seminars. The research laboratory is furnished with different kinds of microtome, incubators and ovens. Other than the Research laboratory, the department has also have a genetic laboratory which is furnished with Bio safety cabinet, CO2 Incubator and in the process of being established with more genetic instruments. Both the Assistant Professor completed a short-course training programme on techniques of Human Karyotyping at NEHU in 2013. The department is now in process of processing Cytogenesis work station with modernized research microscope and genetic software. Body donation process has been started from 2009. The faculty of the department has published their research works in both national and international journals. The “Hands on cadavers’ dissection workshop on FESS” was organized in the department in collaboration with the department on ENT from 2009 to 2011. The department has conducted a One day Symposium, the “Indira Gandhi Memorial Lecture” on 19th December, 2013. The department has also conducted a Workshop on “Emerging role of Virtual Dissection Technology in Integrated Medical Teaching” on 27th November, 2015.
Post graduate studies have been started in the department since 2013. |
