The Department of Biochemistry is an academic basic science department, actively engaged in teaching, diagnostic support, training and research. Undergraduate courses taught include MBBS and BSc nursing. At present on an average more than 400 patients samples are processed in the biochemistry laboratory per day for various clinical investigations. Around 1500 to 2000 numbers of various biochemical investigations are performed per day. Since January 2008 the Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory is operating 24hrs/day providing uninterrupted and unremitting emergency service to the patients visiting NEIGRIHMS. |

Apart from routine tests, hormone assays, viz., thyroid, fertility, renal, tumor markers ,serum protein electrophoresis are done . In the year 2015 we started analysis of 25(OH) vitamin D, Antimullerian Hormone and D Dimer. Furthermore the Biochemistry Laboratory is also routinely conducting biochemical analysis of Urine and various other fluids such as cerebrospinal fluid, peritoneal fluid, pleural fluid etc.
The Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory is also actively involved in stringent Quality Control Programs. Third party Biorad and Randox Internal Quality Control as per the guidelines of ICMR and Quality Council of India are done on a regular basis to verify and validate the reports generated in the Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory. Moreover the Department is also participating in an External Quality Control program in association with EQAS of Association of Clinical Biochemists of India (ACBI) conducted by Christian Medical College, Vellore.

The Department of Biochemistry also added another feather to its cap with the introduction MBBS academic program at NEIGRIHMS. The first batch of 50 students was admitted at NEIGRIHMS in September 2008. Since then the faculty and the resident doctors of the Department of Biochemistry have been actively involved in conducting both theory and practical classes to the MBBS students. Tutorials as well as Periodic Internal Assessments through Semesters were also given to asses the progress of the students. Besides the academic activities in the institution, the faculties are also involved in conducting 1st MBBS examinations, BDS examination in other medical colleges or institutions as external examiner
The Department has also proposed to start the M.D. Biochemistry courses . It is also actively involved in tutoring students enrolled in the institution via Theory and Practical classes for B.Sc. Nursing course including Periodic Internal Assessments through Semesters.
The Department also takes part in the different institutional and regional academic activities on a regular basis for the development of medical man power in the region as per the mandate of the institute. |

Vision of the Department |
|
|
The Department has vision in starting the molecular diagnosis facility in near future which is an urgent need in the region of NE India. In this respect procuring one automated microarray system is in process. Once equipped with real time PCR, Capillary electrophoresis (32 channels), Microarray system, FISH the department will start the molecular diagnosis on regular basis.
