Introduction

Epicentre for advance health care Super Specialty Teaching & Research – NEIGRIHMS conceived its Department of Cardiology in August 1998 and the first Super Specialist in the institute beginning with only OPD services. Dr Animesh Mishra (Professor & HoD) joined the institute on August, 2004 as the founder member of the Department of Cardiology and then carried forward the department  and within a short span of time the department has acquired Electrophysiology lab (October,2014) the TMT Lab, Pacemaker Programming & Holter Lab (March, 2009), Catheterization Laboratory and Mobile Cath Lab Unit (22nd April, 2008), Echocardiography Lab (January,2005), the dedicated Intensive Coronary Care Unit & Cardiology Ward ( on September, 2004) and the ECG Laboratory (September,2004).

Department of Cardiology is the first department which has started the Post Doctoral Course in the institute (i.e., DM Cardiology) in the academic year 2012-13 with intake of 2 (two) students each year) and thus spearheading the inter alia objectives of the institute.

Services

The department of Cardiology runs OPD services in all week days i.e from Monday to Saturday. The services provided are Out patient, In-patient ( of 24 X 7 services) including Coronary Care Unit (CCU) & Cardiology Ward, ECG, Echocardiography lab, Cath lab and TMT lab & Holter lab.

OPD Services:

Noninvasive Cardiology Services:

• Echocardgraphy La (2D & 3D Echo, TOE, Stress Echo)

• Holter Lab (24 & 48 Hour Monitoring)

Invasive Cardiology Services:

• Single Plane Cath Lab with Day Care Area of 8 Beds
• Mobile Cath Lab
• Electrophysiology Lab

Interventional Procedures (diagnostic & therapeutic) performed since started of Catherization lab till date are as follows:

• Diagnostic - CAG/ Check Angio, Renal Angiogram, Aortogram/ Peripheral Angio, RHS, Venogram,   Cath Study, LV Angio.
• Therapeutic - Angioplasty/PTCA, BMV, Coarctation Balloon Dilatation, ASD Closure, TPI, PPI, `Renal Angioplasty, IVC Filter, CRT, PDA Closure, POBA, PVBD, PTRA, AICD, RSOV, Coil Embolization, Pericardial Taping, Combo Device.

Indoor Patient Services

• Coronary Care Unit :11 Bedded
• Cardiology Ward: 32 Bedded

Academic Activities

On the Academic side,  1(one) international), 52 national / regional / update has been published in repute journals. So far DM Cardiology (SRDs) / Non DM SRD & JRDs who worked in the department of Cardiology have submitted their Log Book of all the Academic and Scientific activity they have participated. Work LOG Book of all the units’ year wise are maintained. Daily morning round with bed side teaching for Nurses/SRDs (DM along with Non DM) is a regular feature of our Department. Department has been conducting Seminars, Presentation, Journals Review, etc as a part of routine academic activity.

One of the significant additions in our academic activity in this year is interdepartmental Cath & Cardiovascular Meet on every Friday at 3.00 pm. This interdepartmental meet is attended by esteemed Director, NEIGRIHMS, department of Cardiology, department of CTVS, department of Anesthesia. This activity has boosted the academic temper of the department.

Post Doctoral Courses (DM Cardiology) is being started from the academic year of 2012-13 with intake of 2 (two) students. This is also a significant addition in the academic and patient care activity. Department of Cardiology is the first department which has started the Post Doctoral Course in the institute and hence, is spearheading the inter alia objectives of the institute. 

Another general addition in the academic activity of the institute this year is Clinical Grand Round (CGR) and Mortality Meeting of the institute where department of Cardiology has presented the Cases and actively participated in all the sessions of this auspicious gathering of the institute where Director, NEIGRIHMS, Faculty, SRDs/ JRDs, Nursing Teachers and Staffs, Technical Staffs and UG and PG Students assembled on every Saturday Morning.   

New Techniques Developed

Percutaneous repair of Lutembacher  Syndrome using low septal puncture technique published in Internal Journal.

Vision of the Department

• To generate Cardiologist, trained para-medical staff within the region.
• New Services started Creation of disease management programs for care-continuum -Pacemaker Clinic  and Aorta Clinic
• Destination programs (High excellence) - Program on Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy is underway, nearly 50 patients have  been enrolled.
• Increase the Research work activity on Cardiac issues in the department through funding from ICMR, NEC, and other funding agency/organizations.
