The Department of Microbiology has been functioning since June, 2006 in the permanent campus of NEIGRIHMS at Mawdiangdiang, Shillong-18.
The Department also actively involves in execution of different National Health Programmes in the field of RNTCP, NACO, NVBDCP, IDSP etc. The Department has been identified as a State Reference Laboratory for EQAS activity in HIV testing and development of trained human resource in the State of Meghalaya under NACO, India and Avian Influenza Surveillance Laboratory under National Centre for Disease Control, New Delhi, Govt. of India.
Academically the Department has started the MD Microbiology course since May, 2009 with intake of 2 (two) Postgraduate Students which has increased to 3 (three) Post Graduate Students since 2014.

- OPD specimen collection Centre : It is utilized for recording of the patients, collection of laboratory specimens and transporting to the Main laboratory.
- Indoor specimen collection Centre and Dispatch Counter: Samples from various wards of the hospital and OPD are received, recorded and distributed to different labs for recording, processing, testing and reporting. The diagnostic laboratory reports are finally dispatched to the OPD & IPD patients with due maintenance of records in Registers
- Laboratories : There are following different labs for conducting diagnostic tests and academic activities
- Bacteriology – Culture & sensitivity - Conventional & automated (VITEK)
- Serology
- Immunology
- Parasitology
- Mycology – Culture & sensitivity - Conventional & automated (VITEK)
- Virology – Tissue culture & molecular methods (PCR)
- Mycobacteriology Lab. – Automated methods & molecular methods (VITEK)

- PG and Research Labs : Two separate Labs for use of PG students and research activities

- Media Room : A separate double- room provision is available for preparation of the laboratory media.

- Microbiological Surveillance conducted for ICUs & OTs.
- Designated Microscopic Centre (DMC) : Started since May, 2008 under RNTCP.
- Integrated Counselling & Testing Centre (ICTC) started functioning since August, 2008 under NACO, Govt. of India.
- State Reference Laboratory (SRL): NACO identified the Deptt. of Microbiology, NEIGRIHMS for SRL on External Quality Assessment Scheme in HIV testing for the State of Meghalaya.
- Disease Surveillance : The Department is also co-operating in “Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme” activities of the State Health Authority with special reference to Meningococcal meningitis and Malaria in Meghalaya.
