Introduction

The Department of Pediatrics has been providing advanced and specialized health care to children & adolescents since its inception in 2005. Located in Shillong, it is very well connected to Guwahati, the capital city of Assam by National Highway 40 and can be reached easily via this route. It is currently offering the full range of Pediatric services and is acting as a referral unit for the state of Meghalaya as well as the entire North East India. The department is actively involved in the care of sick children as well as proper upbringing of well children. Other aspects of the department are academics and research on topics related to children.

Services

OPD Services:

• General OPD:Weekdays: Monday to Saturday from 8.30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Special clinics:
• Well baby clinic: Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm

Activities: immunization of children, monitoring of Growth and development, advice regarding breast-feeding and complimentary feeding, attend to minor ailments and parental concerns. Vaccines as per the national immunization schedule as well as optional vaccines are offered.

• At risk follow up clinic: 11 am to 2 pm on every Wednesday.

Activities: Children at high risk of developmental problems like NICU graduates, premature newborn etc are followed up in the clinic with the aim of early stimulation, early diagnosis and early intervention.

• Pediatric nephrology clinic: 10 AM to 2 PM every Thursday.

Activities: Children with nephrotic syndrome and other kidney diseases are followed up in this clinic.

• Emergency Services:
• Sick children are attended to, round the clock, by pediatric residents in the emergency department of the hospital.

In patient services:

• General ward:
  • The department runs a 36 bedded general ward.
• Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU):
  • The department has a 13 bedded PICU. This is the only state of the art Pediatric intensive care facility in Meghalaya. Need of pediatric intensive care is a major cause of referral to the center. Procedures like establishment of central line, mechanical ventilation, peritoneal dialysis, pleural tapping, pericardial tapping, etc. are part of the intensive services.
• Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU):
  • The department has a 6-bedded NICU. The unit takes care of preterm babies, extremely low birth weight and very low birth weight, and small for date babies and sick babies e.g. neonates with respiratory distress, meconium aspiration syndrome, birth asphyxia, neonatal sepsis, neonatal jaundice, and cardiac emergencies. The unit is fully equipped to handle such babies which require special and intensive care. Procedures like Phototherapy, Exchange Transfusion, surfactant therapy, CPAP, conventional ventilation and high frequency oscillatory ventilation are part of services in neonatal intensive care unit. Hearing and ROP screening programmes are also in place.
• Pediatric nephrology services:
  • This unit is the only center offering organized pediatric nephrology services in the north east region. Department of pediatrics, NEIGRIHMS intends to act as a referral center for children with all types of complicated kidney diseases. Services like renal biopsy, Hemodialysis, Peritoneal dialysis, plasmapheresis, CAPD etc. are routinely offered. Children with kidney diseases are followed up in the pediatric nephrology clinic on every Thursdays.
