About the department: |

The Department of Psychiatry at NEIGRIHMS aims to provide comprehensive mental health care services to all sections of society.
The Department was started on 1.12.2010. Initially, the department was attached to the Department of General Medicine but since March 2013 the department has been functioning independently with the joining of a faculty. |

- rTMS facility
A state of the art Repetitive Trans-Cranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) treatment of various Psychiatric disorders has been installed in the Department.
- Modified ECT
Mecta Spectrum 5000 Q ECT machine has been installed and modified ECT services of modified ECT will be made available.

The Department of Psychiatry runs OPD 6 days a week from Monday to Saturday to cater to new and referred patients.
- Special Clinics:
In addition, there are special clinics to cater to specific populations with both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions:
- De-addiction Clinic: Every Wednesday
- Child Guidance Clinic: Every Saturdays
- Community Mental Health Services
Inpatient Service:
At present, a separate in-patient ward has not been started, however patients requiring psychiatric inpatient care are being admitted in other departments of the hospital.
Being a general hospital psychiatry unit, the department caters to the liaison needs of various other departments. All psychiatric referrals from different wards are attended to in their respective wards.
Infrastructure
We conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures like ECT, rTMS and various neuropsychological assessments.

The department recognizes research as one of the important pillars of medical education and strives to facilitate good research environment with the aim of equipping the next generation mental health professionals with the competence to handle all the mental health needs of the community. |

Activities throughout the years organized by the department:
- We also conduct community outreach programs like mental health related programmes to increase awareness on mental illness and to combat stigma.
- In collaboration with Continuing Nursing Education (CNE), NEIGRIHMS, the department has held state level and in-house workshops for nursing staff since 2018.
- The department played an active role in providing psychological care and training for the staff of the Institute during the initial days of the COVID – 19 pandemic.
- The faculty of the Department is invited by other organizations and institutes for training and awareness on Mental Health.
- Counseling program for MBBS students commenced from August, 2014. The counselling program was started to address the psychological problems of the students.
